Search for happiness
The desire to hold on to something is futile.
Can you search for happiness and never let it go?
That is the wrong goal. Because happiness or sadness, success or failure are your own creations. They are meanings which you attribute to a world which has no idea of these things. For example, eating a cake may be abhorrent to a person conscious of his weight but happy for a poor emaciated person.
These meanings change with time, person and situation. They depend on the vagaries of the world. They are unpredictable.
So, don't hanker after happiness. In fact don't hanker after anything selfish.
Once you realise that these emotions are only fleeting, and don't hold any inherent meaning, you will be closer to the true nature of reality. That any self is only a concept, a projection. The world is as it is. That suffering is inevitable. All we can do is accept it and solve the real problems of the day.
That the world is ours and we are the world. This realisation of connection to the world will create empathy for everything. You will reach equanimity and compassion. There will be no more craving for happiness.
